Derventa is a modern city that has been rapidly developing economically and infrastructurally in recent years, in which new residential, commercial and commercial buildings are being built, but which still has the charm and warmth of the former town. It represents a combination of tradition and modern tendencies of living in which differences meet.In the core of the city within a radius of a few hundred meters, which is the center of cultural and administrative development, you can see the centuries-old and historical heritage of the city through different building styles, as well as a testimony of the common life of members of different religions. In this small area there are five religious buildings, two Christian and three Muslim.

According to data from the 2013 Census, 25,922 inhabitants live in the territory of the municipality Derventa, of which the majority population is Serbian – 21,495, while the number of Croats is 2,181, and Bosniaks 1,686.A specific and, in many ways, interesting geographical area, it has attracted travelers and visitors for centuries and, together with the local population, has written the long and rich history of this area. We can say that Derventa unites diversities because it is a junction of important highways that connects it with Banja Luka and Sarajevo.

Derventa – a city of decorated squares and facades

City of Derventa is known for its clean and tidy squares and renovated facades. On Orthodox Square, which is near these mentioned buildings, there is also the newly built Memorial Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.Next to the newly built temple there is also a monument to all the fallen fighters of the Defense – Patriotic War.

On Liberation Square, there is the building of the “Branko Radičević” National Library and the “Nikola Tesla” Elementary School, which date back to the Austro-Hungarian period. In their immediate vicinity there are several religious buildings, the Aliaga Mosque, the Dolnjačka Mosque, the Gornjačka Mosque and the Catholic Church of St. George the Martyr.

Culture

The main carriers of cultural events in the area of the municipality Derventa are the Public Institution Center for Culture and the Branko Radičević National Library, which also houses the museum collection.

The “Branko Radičević” Public Library in Derventa represents one of the key pillars of the cultural and educational life of this city. Its beginnings date back to 1888, when a reading room was founded – one of the oldest in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In 1945, it grew into a library, and in 1994, it got its current name. It is located in a building from the Austro-Hungarian period, built around 1896 in the style of pseudo-Moorish architecture. This building, today a cultural property under the protection of the Institute for the Protection of Monuments, was thoroughly renovated in 2009 after the war’s destruction, and its ground floor serves as a library, while the first floor houses a permanent museum exhibit.The library has a fund of about 45,000 publications and has more than 3,000 active members. Its activities include the acquisition, processing, protection and publishing of books, organization of cultural events, promotions, exhibitions, literary evenings, lectures, as well as workshops and competitions for children and adults. Of special value is the museum collection with about 1,700 exhibits – objects of ethnological, archaeological and historical character, as well as numerous documents and photographs from different periods of history Derventa. One of the traditional events is the Museum Night.

Cultural Center Derventa is a public institution that deals with cultural and artistic activities. It was founded in 2009.year, as the heir to the former House of the JNA, which was the center of cultural life in Derventa. The building of the Cultural Center is an award-winning work of the architect Ivan Štraus, it is located in an attractive location in the very center of the city and has several functional rooms, such as a large and small hall, a gallery, offices, cloakrooms, technical rooms, etc.

This cultural institution organizes and realizes various cultural programs, which include theater, music, film, art, literature and educational content.It cooperates with numerous artists, cultural workers, institutions, associations and organizations, both from Derventa and from other cities and countries with the aim of improving and developing cultural offer and demand in the city and region, to encourage and support creation and creativity, to affirm and promote cultural values and identity, to raise cultural awareness and education of citizens, to nurture and preserve cultural heritage and tradition, to follow and engage in contemporary cultural flows and trends, to build and maintains cultural ties and cooperation at local, national and international levels, and to contribute to cultural and social development and progress.In this institution, everyone interested in acting can express their talent every day within the Derventa Theater, the School of Modern Ballet, the Pop Rock School, as well as many other activities. Theater Derventa gathers gifted children and adults with the aim of enjoying the magic of theater and offering various theater performances to their city.

As part of our recognizable building, there is also a restaurant with 200 seats where various celebrations and private events can be organized.

Cultural-historical complex Detlak

The Detlak cultural-historical complex is an immovable cultural asset of great importance. The total area of the first protection zone of the complex is 8,684 m². The complex consists of:

  • Monastery Church of St. Elijah with an inn, summer house, old school and cemetery, necropolis and Pečina – monastic hermitage. The most important treasure of the monastery is Detlovački Evhologion.
  • The old necropolis is also known as the Greek grave, because there is a legend that a Greek hajduk was buried there.
  • Cave – monastic hermitage is a recess in the rock, with archaeological excavations and objects that indicate that this was a place of residence and prayer of monks.
  • Ambarine is an archaeological site that in 2010declared an immovable cultural asset.

On the territory of Derventa there are a large number of religious buildings: Monastery of the Protection of the Holy Virgin, Monastery Church of St. Ilije, the Cathedral and Memorial Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Plehan Monastery, the Greek Catholic Church, the City Mosque and others.

Education

In the city of Derveta, there are 4 elementary schools, with regional schools, 14 of which are fifth-grade, and 6 nine-grade schools.  As part of the “Nikola Tesla” Elementary School, there is also an Elementary Music School.SŠC “Mihajlo Pupin” and Vocational and Technical School are institutions that perform the function of high school education.

In Dervetna there is also a college of applied and legal sciences “Promethej”, which educates the following profiles: business economics, transport engineering and business informatics.

Sports

Sports events in Derventa are first and foremost Sports Center Derventa, which is the central venue for all indoor sports competitions. The traditional New Year’s futsal tournament, the biggest sports event in our city, is organized every year in its area.This hall is also the home of the Handball Club Derventa, which competes in the highest level – the Premier League BiH.

In addition to futsal tournaments, the Sports Hall hosts numerous league meetings and tournaments in martial arts, matches of KMF Derventa, Volleyball Club Derventa, as well as many other sports events. It also manages Partizan’s playground, which during the summer becomes a center for youth recreational activities, with the organization of tournaments in street basketball, indoor soccer and 3×3 soccer.As part of the City Stadium, there is a football field and stands with 500 seats, where the Tekstilac Football Club plays its matches, one of the oldest sports teams in this part BiH, founded way back in 1919. In addition to the main field, the stadium also has a field with artificial grass, as well as an athletic training ground under construction, which will further improve the development of athletics in Derventa.

New disciplines give special dynamics to the sports scene – OCR races are starting, as well as off-road jeep and quad competitions, while the Beach Volleyball Tournament proudly inherits a tradition of more than 25 years.A significant role in the sports life of the city is also played by the “Ukrina” Sports-Fishing Society, which organizes a number of competitions in several sports fishing disciplines. Also, the Chess Club is very active in its field.

Derventa is also located on the route of the Belgrade-Banja Luka international cycling race, and Derventa currently has two cycling clubs.

As the crown of sporting achievements, every year the most successful athlete Derventa is chosen, chosen by citizens and an expert jury, and this event is organized by the Public Company “Derventski list i Radio Derventa”.

Tourism and recreation

The carrier of tourism development in Derventa is the Tourist Organization Derventa.  About fifty important events are held annually, and the most important is the Derventa Fair, which has the longest tradition and the most visitors. It has been held since 1851.

Since the middle of the 20th century, Vašar, in addition to the economic one, has increasingly acquired an entertainment character. It is enriched with catering services, an amusement park, games of chance and other contents.With Vashar as the central event, more and more economic, sports, cultural and artistic events are starting to be organized.

Excursions

There are excursion sites and museum collections in Derventa villages.

Significant natural potentials are the Ukrina River and the Sava River. On the Ukrina river, the Patkovača excursion site with a 150-meter long beach, the Prljača swimming pool (18 km), the Stevića mill (20 km) and the Žuti most swimming pool (15 km from Dervetna) are important.
